Backup Meaning

What is Backup:

Backup is the hispanization of back up, an English expression that means "endorsement". It is mainly used in computing, where it stands for backup copy of information stored on an electronic device. In Spanish, this concept is also known as backup copy, backup copy and reserve copy.

The ultimate purpose of backup it is, essentially, allowing data to be restored once it has been lost or the device has become unusable. Thus, the backup and restoration are complementary processes.

In order to guarantee the information, people, companies, institutions and organizations carry out a backup periodical, which protects them against scenarios such as:

  • Material errors by the user, who may have inadvertently deleted essential files or applications from their device.
  • Obsolescence of the device, which can generate functional or physical damage to the device, compromising access to stored information.
  • Computer attacks or cyberattacks, that is, deliberate attempts to intervene, manipulate and damage a computer system for different purposes.

In addition, users must do backup of the data of your devices both before updating the operating system, and before changing devices.

Supports and techniques to make backup

Today there are various options available to users to perform a backup tailored to needs. On a small scale external hard drives can be used, pentdrives, SD cards, CD "s, DVD" s, etc. On a large scale, as in the case of companies and institutions, the backup it can be done on local servers.

Today one of the most practical and secure forms of backup is the cloud, that is, a worldwide network of remote servers connected to each other as a single ecosystem.

The cloud is also available for private use. Some companies offer services through applications such as Dropbox, Google drive or iCloud.

In addition to these supports, there is a set of techniques to make the processes of backup more efficient. These are executed by means of softwares or applications, since they are extremely complex.

As an example, we can mention deduplication (elimination of duplicate data), compression (understanding the weight and volume occupied by the data) and encryption (a security system to protect the confidentiality of stored information), among others.
