What is Solid State:

A solid state is understood to be one of the four states of aggregation of matter, whose main characteristic is opposition and resistance to change in shape and volume.

A good part of the substances that exist are in a specific state that, together with the solid, are called: liquid, gaseous and plasmatic. The word solid derives from Latin solÄ­dus, which means strong or firm.

Solid state matter is composed of a set of particles that are found together and in order, and maintain their shape thanks to the cohesion and strong attraction of their molecules.

As the particles of a solid are ordered and with a certain geometric regularity, this gives rise to the formation of various crystalline structures.

Solid state matters are one of the most common and observable, they can only move through the oscillation or vibration of their fixed parts and their particles cannot move freely from one place to another along the solid.

However, there are materials that can change from an initial solid state and melt after reaching the melting point, this thanks to the speed of movement reached by the molecules and because they overcome the force of attraction and leave their fixed position and their crystalline structure. it is slowly destroyed.

Solid state characteristics

Matter in solid state is mainly characterized by having a constant shape and volume. That is, a matter in a solid state cannot be compressed just by squeezing it or pressing it.

Another characteristic that can be added is that when the matter is in a solid and resting state, it presents a resistance that prevents modifying its malleability and ductility.

However, many solids can be deformed because they have various properties such as the elasticity with which a solid matter can recover its initial state after being deformed). It can also have other properties such as toughness or brittleness.

On the other hand, solid state materials can increase or decrease in volume when exposed to very high or low temperatures. These phenomena are known as expansion and contraction.

Also, some solid state materials can be amorphous, rigid and of high density.
