Meaning of environmental impact

What is Environmental Impact:

The environmental impact It is a change or an alteration in the environment, being a cause or an effect due to human activity and intervention. This impact can be positive or negative, the negative represents a breakdown in the ecological balance, causing serious damage and harm to the environment, as well as to the health of people and other living beings. For example, pollution of the air or the seas with garbage or oil, noise pollution, wars, waste from radioactive energy, among others.

Measuring environmental impact cannot be done precisely, because the environment is a complex system. In ecology, it is possible to make some estimates through the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment, translated by Study or Environmental Impact Assessment), which emerged in the United States in the 1960s, and the respective Environmental Sustainability Reports (ISA), to try to minimize the negative impact.

The vast majority of economic activities imply and entail an environmental impact. Energy and mining industries (for example, a hydroelectric plant or a mine) cause an environmental impact.Waste and residues from industries are generally disposed of or disposed of in three ways: in water, in the atmosphere or in isolated areas.

The oil industry can have a very negative impact on workers in the industry (through explosions and chemical accidents), and also on wildlife when leaks occur. On the other hand, on many occasions, the contamination of the environment causes the contamination of food, with a serious risk to the health of the populations. As the exploitation of this resource is high risk and creates environmental impacts, an environmental permit is needed, which imposes some measures to reduce these impacts.

Environmental impact is the result or consequence of our actions, and for this reason it is crucial to educate society so that it can have responsible attitudes that cause fewer negative impacts on the environment.

Positive environmental impact

A positive environmental impact is the result of a rule, standard or measure that is beneficial to the environment. The restoration or recovery of rivers and forests have a positive environmental impact. The construction of a dam can also have a positive impact on the fauna and flora of a given region.

Types of environmental impacts

Based on the duration of the effect of an environmental impact in a given place, there is a classification of four different types of environmental impact:
- Persistent, which has long-term influence.
- Temporary, which for a certain time does not have serious consequences, and therefore the environment can recover relatively quickly.
- Reversible, which can recover the environment from the damage suffered, in a more or less short time.
- Irreversible, which is so serious and important that it completely prevents the environment from recovering from the damage caused by the environmental impact.
