Meaning of Mbps (or Megabit per second)
What is Mbps (or Megabit per second):
It is known as Mbps or Mbit / s, which stands for “Megabits per second”. It is a unit of data transmission equivalent to 1,000 kilobits per second or 1,000,000 bits.
As such, Mbps is a data transfer rate used in serial communications and measures the number of megabits that are transferred per second.
For example, Mbps or Mbit / s are used to measure the speed of a connection, such as the internet, Wi-Fi networks, or to measure video quality.
Cases in which we can use this expression would be: a VHS is 2 Mbps, a DVD is 8 Mbps, an HDTV is 55 Mbps, it all depends on the electronic device that is used.
Mbps and MB / s
The megabyte is another unit of data transmission that corresponds to a throughput that is 8 times that of the megabit per second.
In relation to this point, it is important to calculate the transfer rate given in Mbps to MB / s, and vice versa, since many companies, especially those of connections, offer megabit per second (Mbps), and not the usual unit megabyte per second (MB / s), consequently:
- From Mbps to MB / s, it consists of dividing the value by 8.
- From MB / s to Mbps, it lies in multiplying the value by 8.
For example: 100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB / s.
Mbps and Kbps
The kilobit per second is a unit of data transmission. It is used in computing and telecommunications to measure the speed of information transfer through a network. The Mbps equals 1,000 Kbps. For example: 8 Mbps is 8,000 Kbps.
Mbps and GB
Gigabits is a unit of measurement used to measure the amount of data transmitted in a given period. For its part, Mbps refers to the speed of data transfer.
