Meaning of Numismatics

What is Numismatics:

Numismatics is an auxiliary science of archeology that deals with the knowledge of the coins or medals issued by a nation. In the same way, the word numismatic is the hobby of collecting coins or medals.

The term numismatics is of Latin origin, it is derived from the word "numism"Which expresses"currency”And, this from the Greek "Nomism", Derived from"nomos" What does it mean "custom or convention ".

Numismatics has been known since the Roman Empire but it was in the 20th century that it began to be treated as a science, which includes its studies in the theoretical and historical aspect. The first point refers to the study of the nomenclature, bases of the classification, among others; in turn, the historical part is in charge of studying the development of the currency in the different towns and its different monetary manifestations.

However, numismatics covers 2 eras. In the beginning, there were no non-metallic currencies, so exchanges of goods and products took place and, consequently, the peoples used their products of greater value as currency. Then, the metallic coins originated, at first metal utensils and ingots were used as currency, then the weight appeared and, the most relevant step was the printing of the first official seal that accredited the fixed weight of the ingot.

Currently, there is the term exonumia, considered as a branch of numismatic science since it not only studies coins but also different forms of money such as credit cards, checks, bonuses, etc. The study covers its use, history, geography, economy, among other points. Likewise, the notaphilia starts from the numismatic discipline which is dedicated to studying, collecting and disseminating especially paper money, bills and stamps. In conclusion, numismatics not only studies coins but also the different forms of money.

In relation to the definition given to the numismatic expression, it should be clarified that a person can be a numismatic without being a collector or a collector without being a numismatic or, failing that, both. This is by virtue of the fact that numismatists study coins or different forms of money and, in turn, collectors are characterized by having monetary objects. However, there are numismatic individuals and collectors, that is, they keep monetary objects and study them.

On the other hand, the person in charge of numismatizing, that is, studying numismatics or writing about it is known as a numismatist or has a special knowledge of the science under study. Similarly, the term numismatographer is related to the person who is the author of one or more numismatic works.

Numismatic science is of utmost importance since it allows to observe and have knowledge about the exchanges and the economy of the peoples, as well as their history, geography, politics, religion, customs, among other points. In relation to numismatics, there is paleography, symbolism, iconology, art history, among other sciences that serve to provide knowledge about the history of a people or nation.
