Meaning of Zumba

What is Zumba:

Zumba is a type of physical activity (fitness) based on Latin American rhythms and music. Its origin is Colombia and it is widespread throughout the world. Zumba choreographies include rhythms such as samba, salsa, reggaeton, cumbia, merengue, and mambo.

Beto Pérez, the creator of Zumba, says that he improvised the first Zumba class in the 90s when one day he forgot his music for the aerobics class and used some salsa and merengue tapes. The formation of this word can come from the fusion of the words "zumbar" and "rumba".

Zumba classes

There are different modalities and variants in addition to the Zumbia itself: Zumba Step, Zumba Toning, Aqua Zumba, Zumba Sentao, Zumba Gold, Zumba Gold-Toning, Zumba Kids, Zumba Kids Jr., Zumbini and Zumba in the Circuit. Classes are taught by official instructors and usually last one hour, although they vary depending on their modality. The choreography usually combines movements or steps in which resistance also trains. Some classes may be oriented to work on a specific aspect. For example, the Zumba Step focuses on working the lower body, burning calories, and toning and strengthening the glutes and legs.

One of the characteristic aspects of Zumba is its playful aspect. In addition, this type of practice is recommended by experts since it can improve cardiorespiratory capacity as long as physical exercise is carried out with moderate intensity and duration.

Practice zumba

Zumba can be practiced in groups in clubs and gyms but through new technologies it is possible to have access to practical classes through online videos.

There are also video games for the Wii and Xbox 360º console, videos on DVD and applications for mobile phones and tablets.

The Zumba Fitness company also markets other types of products such as music CDs, clothing, footwear, magazines and accessories related to Zumba.
